Politics Up Close: International Students Visit Salzburg City Hall
What does local politics look like in practice—and how does it compare across countries? Our international students explored these questions during an insightful visit to Salzburg City Hall on 15 May 2025, where they were warmly welcomed by Mayor Bernhard Auinger. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of political education and active civic engagement, especially at the municipal level.
In the following interactive workshop, led by Lukas Stockinger, students learned how local governance works in Salzburg. Topics included the structure and responsibilities of the city council, decision-making processes, and opportunities for public participation.
A highlight of the afternoon was the international perspective. Students shared experiences from their home countries and engaged in a dynamic discussion about similarities and differences in democratic systems. The visit offered a hands-on experience of local politics and showed just how vital cross-cultural dialogue is to understanding and strengthening democracy.
Many thanks to Mayor Auinger and Lukas Stockinger for this enriching afternoon!
