Experiencing Media Ethics Firsthand
Our students visited the ORF and gained firsthand insight into journalism as a profession rooted in responsibility. Public broadcasting plays a vital role in a liberal democracy. It provides independent information, offers orientation, and protects diversity of opinion.
This visit was especially valuable for future educators. Those who aim to teach democracy must also foster media literacy and ethical awareness. The ORF tour made one thing clear: quality journalism is grounded in strong values – independence, transparency, fairness, and accountability.
The students asked thoughtful questions: How do journalists handle political pressure? What ensures balanced reporting? And what does “constructive journalism” look like in practice?
At a time when social media often fuels polarization, the importance of public service broadcasting for a vibrant democracy became even more apparent. The visit highlighted that those who shape education also share responsibility for democracy – and need a clear understanding of the role of independent, values-based media.
